Diagnosis of Borreliosis

The clinical symptomatology of a Borreliosis is frequently extraordinarily variable. One assay alone is often not sufficient to detect a specific infection. Manifold investigative techniques provide additional safety. The assays offered for Borrelia burgdorferi include different enzyme immunoassays, the indirect hemagglutination inhibition test, the Borrelia burgdorferi-coated slides and reagents of the indirect immunofluorescence test as well as the BAG Borrelia Blot. Only the certain detection of antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi-antigens can confirm the presumptive clinical diagnosis.

The indirect hemagglutination inhibition test BAG-Borrelia-HA-Test is standardised and highly specific. Cross-reactions with syphilis sera or sera which exhibit antibodies against saprophytic spirochetes are unknown.

In the BAG-Borrelia-EIA-M or BAG-Borrelia-EIA-G the separate IgM and IgG determinations, respectively, make the diagnosis of an early infection or for serological screening, respectively, possible.

As an additional assay system, the BAG offers Borrelia burgdorferi-coated slides as well as individual reagents for the performance of the indirect immunofluorescence test. New: now also available as a kit with all the required components.

The BAG-Borrelia-Blot exhibits additional criteria with regard to sensitivity and specificity compared to the above-mentioned methods. This recombinant immunoblot allows the identification of IgG and/or IgM antibodies against specific antigens from Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto, B. garinii and B. afzelii and serves to confirm the results of the previously performed screening tests.

Syphilis

Syphilis is an infectious disease which is caused by the Spirochete Treponema pallidum. Infection occurs by sexual contacts, and in pregnant women the infection can be transmitted diaplacentally. Syphilis diagnostics are legally mandatory for blood and organ donations. Beyond this, to rule out an infection of congenital syphilis in the scope of prenatal diagnostics, an examination for antibodies against T. pallidum is recommended.

The TPHA-Syphilis-Test is appropriate as a screening test for syphilis infections, because it exhibits high sensitivity and specificity.

As an additional assay system, BAG offers Treponema pallidum-coated slides as well as individual reagents for the performance of the indirect immunofluorescence test. Now also available as a kit with all the required components.

Hemagglutination test for the determination of antibodies against Treponema pallidum.

The TPHA Test is based on the principle of indirect hemagglutination. Sheep erythrocytes which have been tanned and fixed with glutaraldehyde are loaded with purified Treponema pallidum antigens (Nichols strain). Antibodies, which are formed in the course of a syphilis infection in patients, agglutinate these sensitized erythrocytes specifically; whereas the unsensitized control erythrocytes exhibit no reaction. To avoid unspecific reactions, an extract of REITER Treponema antigens and Forssmann antigen has been added to the dilution medium.

The FTA-ABS Test for the identification and confirmation of antibodies against Treponema pallidum.

The FTA-ABS Test is based on the assay principle of indirect immunofluorescence. The microscope slides which have been coated with Treponema pallidum are covered with a layer of the patient serum to be investigated. The antibodies formed in the course of a syphilis infection bind specifically to these antigens which are presented to them and can subsequently be visualised immunologically with FITC-labelled antibodies.
